November Pastor's Note

The March of Lament on Saturday, October 18, was a beautiful, moving, powerful event. It’s hard to call something beautiful when the reason for gathering is so cruel, but it was beautiful to see our community come together across lines of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, language, and other common lines of division. I was so grateful to be there and to be part of it, and for it to happen on our front lawn. It was a sacred event on sacred space.

It’s not the first time Trinity’s grounds have been used for social witness, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. We are certainly putting ourselves “out there” in opposition to what ICE is doing in our community, but it’s not the first time we’ve put ourselves out there, either. This ministry of showing up communicates more vocally about who we are than just about anything else we might do. I can’t speak for the hundreds who were on the lawn, but it seemed as though people felt truly comfortable and welcome here. For those who know Trinity, it made perfect sense that we would be gathering here.

This month we will begin our discernment around “placemaking.” I hope you are all able to be present on Sunday, November 9th, when we’ll have a presentation and opportunity for table discussion with Sara Joy Proppe. We are already ahead of many churches in terms of using our building and grounds to welcome our neighbors, and it’s exciting to think about ways we can do that more intentionally.

Thank you all for being a light in our community and a host in the midst of hostility. This is sacred space because God is here. May we be faithful and wise stewards of it.

Grace and Peace,

Stephanie
