Called to Make Christ’s Presence Known

Trinity Presbyterian Church’s core belief statement, “What Is God Saying to Trinity,” calls us to commit to a life in Christ: “We believe that the church is more than an institution; it is the household of God. As members of this household, we are a priesthood of believers - called, gifted, and enabled by the Holy Spirit to make Christ’s presence known.” Hence, our stewardship belongs to all seasons. We are called year-round to be engaged, not just financially, but also as pilgrims walking a road of personal growth, community building, outreach, and worship. All aspects of our lives, including time, talents, financial resources and spirituality, need stewarding, and how we foster and use these gifts at home and in the world shows our commitment to God and to each other.
Stewardship runs the gamut from contributions of money to self-care—writers of checks, stewards of our own health—and in between those two occurs most of the life of the church. Across that range, needs have changed and grown. Times are trying. While we have faithfully done our part to sustain the back-pack program, in Harrisonburg this year there are more hungry children and food costs higher. Eight thousand three hundred miles away there are children whose welfare depends on us. That’s two examples only. All of us are facing inflation, some are experiencing considerable disruption in their employment, and some of us will confront enormous surges in health insurance costs. We have a special responsibility to remember care for those who care for us as we write a budget for 2026. How do we face the challenges? How do we change them into opportunities to thrive as servants of Christ’s message?
The finance team members—Jeannie, John, Linda, Mark, Nancy, Rick, and Stephanie—are deeply grateful for how much your generosity makes our work easier.
If you need them, there are Pledge and Time and Talent forms online below. You may also print them and bring them on November 9 or return them to church office.
A Theology of Stewardship
Trinity Presbyterian Church
October 2024
Matthew 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something
to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you
looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
Trinity Presbyterian Church’s core belief statement, “What Is God Saying to Trinity” calls us to total
commitment to a life in Christ by saying. “We believe that the church is more than an institution; it is the
household of God. As members of this household, we are a priesthood of believers - called, gifted, and enabled
by the Holy Spirit to make Christ’s presence known, breaking down human barriers and working, through
servant ministry, for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment. As disciples of Christ Jesus, we respond to
this call with total commitment.”
Because of our total commitment to a life in Christ and Christ’s body, our stewardship is not confined to just
one season of the year, but is a year-round calling. This integrated approach to stewardship helps create a
balanced and faithful Christian life, rooted in gratitude, responsibility, and love. All aspects of our lives,
including our time, talents, financial resources and spirituality, are stewardship, and how we use these gifts in
helping our community and world shows our commitment to our God and each other.
Trinity embeds stewardship in the Four Marks of the church: Nurture, Fellowship, Mission, and Worship. Each
of these areas provides unique opportunities to practice and express stewardship.
Nurture involves the care and growth of individuals, both spiritually and emotionally. In the context of
stewardship, nurturing emphasizes the responsibility to foster spiritual development. This can include teaching,
mentoring, and providing resources for growth in faith. Stewardship in nurture means being mindful of how we
cultivate our own and others' gifts, talents, and spiritual insights. It involves creating environments where
people can thrive, learn, and mature in their faith, ensuring that the community is built up and individuals are
supported in their journey.
Fellowship refers to the building of relationships within the Christian community. Stewardship in fellowship
involves fostering a sense of unity, love, and support among believers. It includes sharing time, resources, and
talents to strengthen the community and ensure that all members feel valued and included. It also involves being
attentive to the needs of others, offering support, encouragement, and practical help, and ensuring that the
community reflects the love and hospitality of Christ.
Mission as part of stewardship encompasses the call to serve others, both locally and globally. It involves the
responsible use of our resources to support outreach efforts including house churches, marks groups, and
benevolences. This includes financial support for missionary activities, volunteering time and skills, and
advocating for justice and mercy. We believe whenever possible, the church’s mission should be face-to-face
and corporate, as this helps build fellowship and gives increased strength to our work. But mission also
celebrates the outreach and giving of time as individuals.
Worship is a central aspect of Christian life where believers express their reverence and devotion to God.
Stewardship in worship involves the responsible use of time, talents, and resources to honor and glorify God.
This can include offering financial support for the church's ministries, participating in worship services, and
using one's talents in music, teaching, or other areas to enhance the worship experience.
Integrating stewardship into these Four Marks: Nurture, Fellowship, Mission, and Worship encourages believers
to view every aspect of their lives as an opportunity to honor God and serve others. Stewardship is not just
about financial management but encompasses personal growth, community building, outreach, and worship.
